Building the Construction TeamThe construction industry faces a unique challenge. Every time we mobilize to start a new job, we are, in effect creating a brand new organization. Some people may have worked together on other jobs, but there are always new players. And every job is different. Taking a few hours to get the new team together before the job starts can make the difference between a job delivered safely, on-time, and on-budget, and a job that fails. Our special "Building the Construction Team" process is an intense six-hour experience designed to achieve the following: 1. Get the team members familiar with each other's background so prior talents are known and can be used in the new job. 2. Help team members learn each other's style of working and approach to conflict resolution. 3. Develop a common understanding of the job's "big picture" - especially the potential problem areas which will have to be managed. 4. Agree upon a set of teamwork and communication protocols to guide the team throughout the job. 5. Establish accountability within the team through the use of an "internal partnering charter" process. This process is appropriate for use by large general and specialty contractors who will have at least five people working as a team on a given project. This process can also be modified to include team members from multiple contracting companies who will be working together on a common job. Unlike some consulting organizations which use unrelated games and unrealistic exercises to promote team building, we believe that the learning is faster and better when games are avoided. We emphasize using the team's actual problems, situations, and challenges as the focus for learning -- so not only does the team get built, but real problems and situations get resolved at the same time.
